Experiencing Dublin's Imrpov Comedy
During one of my lunch break walking excursions through Grafton Street and St. Stephen's Green, I stopped for a moment at Wicklow Street's International Bar. In the window I glanced upon a poster that read: "Comedy Improv; Every Monday night at The International Bar", and I was very intrigued. Seeing a Play at the Famous Abbey Theatre
As a part of our Anglo-Irish Literature class, the nice people at FIE treated us to some tickets to Brian Friel's play "Translations" at the historic Abbey Theatre. The Abbey, located on Lower Abbey Street in the heart of Dublin, has also been known as the National Theatre of Ireland since its opening in 1904.
A Change Comes to Dublin and Struggles Onward
One of the much more depressing activities we did over the course of the trip was our visit to the headquarters of The Docklands Society along the River Liffey. The Docklands, an area in Dublin which runs along both sides of the Liffey, was at one time a prominent shipyard which has become abandoned and desolate in more recent years. But like so much of the city, it saw a dramatic transformation when the Celtic Tiger economy boom hit the country of Ireland.
A Visit to Northern Ireland and the Peace Walls
While traveling through Northern Ireland, our first night on the other side of the border was spent in the British city of Belfast. "British? Sean that doesn't make any sense." Well it's a funny thing. As a part of the Anglo-Irish treaty of 1922, Ireland was split, the Republic of Ireland being an independent nation and Northern Ireland, which remained part of the United Kingdom.
The Town of Bloody Sunday
During our tour of Northern Ireland, the most interesting and enjoyable stop occurred when our bus (driven by our man Roger) rolled into the tiny city of Derry. Arriving early Friday evening, we had just enough time to grab some dinner, before going out and using the best tool for discovering a new place, a session at the local pub.
